A Portrait of Managua Nicaragua - circA 1994

…plastic bags hanging on washing lines…children playing with discarded batteries…a woman making tortillas…a man repairing shoes…families living in the remains of an abandoned theatre…

In 1994, I traveled to Managua as part of a film crew making a documentary about slum dwellers who had survived the double ravages of, both, political upheaval and natural disaster. Curiously, most people owned a television even as they lacked indoor plumbing. Despite their hardships I found them to be generous and dignified, always offering a smile.
